READ IT

Read: Zechariah 13

In Chapter 13, the Lord says he will preserve a remnant.

This remnant will be put through the fire. Not a literal fire. But a figurative one. Just as gold and silver are refined in fire, God’s people will go through “the refiner’s fire.”

During the process of refining precious metals, the dross rises to the surface and is scraped off, leaving the liquid metal in a purer form. Suffering does the same thing. When we yield to our Father, he refines us through suffering.

Zechariah declares that God’s people will endure suffering, but their suffering will refine them.

“I will put this third through the fire;
I will refine them as silver is refined
and test them as gold is tested.
They will call on my name,
and I will answer them.
I will say: They are my people,
and they will say: The Lord is our God.” (Zechariah 13:9)

After the testing — after the refiner’s fire — God’s people will call on his name.

Are you in a season of suffering now?

When the flames of the refiner’s fire grow ember-hot, we can call on his name.

And God will answer. It’s a promise.

WRITE IT

In a journal or notebook, write Zechariah 13:9.

“I will put this third through the fire;
I will refine them as silver is refined
and test them as gold is tested.
They will call on my name,
and I will answer them.
I will say: They are my people,
and they will say: The Lord is our God.”

Or write any passage from today’s reading that stands out to you.

PRAY IT

Thank you, Lord, that our suffering is never in vain. You have purposes beyond what we can see. Help me to trust you in the fire. Refine in me a heart that seeks you — and you alone. You are holy and good. Thank you for always hearing me when I call on your name. In your name I pray, amen.
