Welcome to our online Bible study on Luke!
Read: Luke 5:1-16
Sometimes I feel nearly invincible. But in this moment — weary from grueling, discouraging work — I am painfully aware of my frailty.
In Luke 5, we see Simon, James, and John cleaning their nets after a long night of fishing, with nothing to show for it. Then Jesus steps into their boat.
From inside the boat, Jesus tells them to put out into deeper waters. And the catch of fish is so supernaturally large, Simon falls to his knees in humility. And it’s in this posture that Simon is called. It’s in this posture that Simon learns of his real purpose. Jesus looks at Simon and says:
Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people. (Luke 5:10)
Maybe, just maybe, we need to be completely aware of our inadequacy and His total sufficiency before we can receive the calling Jesus has for our lives.
Humility. Calling. In that order.
Jesus reveals His real calling when we are at His feet, when we are a flat-out insufficient mess. That’s when He fills our emptiness with His purpose.
The invitation to push out into deeper waters continues today. Jesus is calling us to Him. He has a plan and purpose for each of our lives. How will we respond?
