Welcome to our online Bible study on John!
— Read: John 7:37-53 —
As our kids get older, there really isn’t any “thing” they need.
So, lately, we’ve been doing gifts a little differently. Instead of giving a “thing” that can be wrapped and unwrapped, we’ve been trying to give “experiences” instead. We plan little weekend excursions, and every once in a while, we plan a trip to someplace we’ve never been.
Last year I had the pleasure of speaking at Raising Generations Today, a conference in upstate New York for moms (which I highly recommend!). I took both of my daughters with me. Traveling together is becoming, more and more, something we’re really enjoying. Well, after the conference was over, we hopped in our rental car and drove a couple of hours north to Niagara Falls. We’d never been before, so this was a first for all of us.
Niagara Falls is every bit as amazing and beautiful and breathtaking as I’d always heard — and seen in pictures!
I was surprised at how close we could get to the river. We were just a few feet from the water. I was also struck by how fast the water was moving toward the falls.
Most people look at the falls from below, looking up at the massive flow of water, falling into the gorge below. And the sight is, indeed, impressive.
But I kept looking up river. I couldn’t help but wonder…will the supply of water ever run out? Will the river ever run dry? Especially when you consider how much water falls every second of every minute! And to think that this same river has been flowing for years and years! That’s what I think of when Jesus says:
“If anyone is thirsty, he should come to Me and drink! The one who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.” (John 7:37-38)
Jesus is speaking, of course, of the Spirit. Those who believe in Christ will receive the Holy Spirit, dwelling inside them. And the Spirit is a stream of “living water” flowing from deep within every believer.
The picture I have in my mind is Niagara Falls. Constantly flowing. Never short on supply.
In the same way, the stream of “living water” — from the Holy Spirit — will not run dry. For it comes from a never-ending Source.

When you’re feeling worn and weary from a long day,
or a seemingly never-ending circumstance that is trying,
ask the Lord to remind you that He is a limitless supply of living water,
bringing life to all who are thirsty.
