Read: Ephesians 2:17-22
I grew up within miles of my cousins.
We went to school together, enjoyed sleepovers on the weekends, and teased each other like siblings. We spent our summers hacking weeds in the bean fields, performing operations on bugs, and recording radio shows on our tape recorder. Grandma and Grandpa’s house was truly home base, the place we’d always be on Christmas Eve, the best location from which to sell sweet corn, the site of many a Sunday dinner, the locale of our favorite fishing pond.
We’re all adults now with families of our own, but I still see my cousins at least once a year. Our kids know each other and even if playing on opposite teams for different schools, greet each other warmly. Though few of us possess the name any more, we are the Kubik clan, a group of people with common history, on the same team. Always.
We found a place to belong.
This is Paul’s glorious message in Ephesians 2:17-22. You belong! Through Jesus you have a place among God’s family.
“He brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from Him, and peace to the Jews who were near. Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us. So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family.” (Ephesians 2:17-19 NLT)
No matter who you are or where you’re from, if you accept Christ as the Son of God who shed His blood on the cross for you, you are ushered into a special clan, a tribe, your very own people.
You have a place to belong.
As if that weren’t good news enough, Paul takes it a step further than my earthly family ever could. He says this extraordinary family of God is a place where He Himself dwells, as in, He lives within us!
We are carefully joined together in Him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through Him you Gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by His Spirit. (Ephesians 2:21-22 NLT)
We are never alone, never outside of His presence, abiding with Him always.
Jesus gives us a place to belong.
